Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenge (June 17th)

TONY GALLOPIN : "The Ventoux is mythical"

"I feel good. After I had to abandon the Giro (the 16th stage on May 28th), I took a week off the bike. Then I gradually started to ramp up my efforts, and since the beginning of the week, I am training as usual. Having to abandon is always a big disappointment. We leave our friends and teammates, and all of a sudden you’re home again. It’s not easy to digest. And my first race back will be a very difficult one that culminates with the ascent of Mont Ventoux. It will be a good test before moving on to the Route d’Occitanie (June 20-24). I think that the organizer’s whole idea for this race is very good, especially with the cyclosportif event the day before. I have been in the area for a few days, and I am taking advantage of it. The Ventoux is mythical. It’s part of the history of cycling. Whenever I am in the region, my eye is drawn to the mountain. I have only had the chance to climb to the top in a race once, in the 2013 Tour de France, and that event marked me for sure. It is a difficult climb, with steep slopes in the forest and the final on the moonscape is impressive.”TONY GALLOPIN

THE NUMBER

5

Clément Venturini took fifth place in the 5th stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné. This is his second top 5 since the start of the Critérium du Dauphiné, and his 15th top 10 of the season. "We knew that the placement would be essential 1.2 km from the finish. And indeed that turned out to be the case. I was able to pull back some places but that was not enough in the end," he said.
