Tour of the Alps (Stage 4) : Victory for Mattéo Montaguti.
“After going seven years without a victory, it is fantastic to win this stage, and to take my first victory while wearing an AG2R LA MONDIALE jersey.
The team has been working well together for quite a while, but we have lacked a little bit of success. Hubert (Dupont) really put in an amazing attack this stage. And then when the peloton caught back up to him, I knew that it would still be possible to do something special.
I wanted to follow Dennis’ wheel, and in the final straight, I managed to pass on the righthand side of Pinot…it was very tight, and I thought I was going to crash just after
I crossed the line! I am pleased to be able to put such a good ending on a strong day for the team. This is the best way to approach the Giro d’Italia (May 5th to the 28th) that is coming in two weeks. Last year, I took second place in one of the stages (the 8th).
So now I will be arriving with even greater confidence…”

After Samuel Dumoulin’s victory in the 1st stage of the Tour du Haut Var on February 18th and Alexandre Geniez’s win during the 2nd stage of the Tour de Provence on February 22nd, Mattéo Montaguti takes the third victory for the AG2R LA MONDIALE team this season. This is his first win since joining the team in 2011.
Hubert Dupont : "I Believed in it"
Hubert Dupont was certainly one of the men of the day. Dupont believed in his chances for a stage win until the last kilometer. “I broke away from the group with 30 kilometers to go to the finish, almost in the exact same place as last year. It took me 20 kilometers I think to catch up to the two riders who were already ahead, and if they had waited for me with 15km to go, I think the outcome for the day may well have been different. But that’s so much the worse for them especially since for me, the team still came away with the victory with Mattéo (Montaguti). We still have a big day to look forward to tomorrow, but the legs are there, so the confidence follows.”
